One question, 118 countries, forty years
The World Values Survey has asked whether homosexuality is justifiable, on the same 1–10 scale, since 1981. Holding the question fixed and varying the chart — scatter, trajectories, map — shows how much of what a reader concludes is the form's doing.
National mean of “Homosexuality justifiable (1–10 mean)” against GNI per capita. The income axis is logarithmic; dot area is the survey N; the line is one least-squares fit through every country with its 95% band. The fit says development travels with permissiveness — the residuals say it is nowhere near the whole story.
