The short version

We don't run analytics, don't use tracking cookies, and don't load third-party scripts. There is no ad network, no session-recording tool, and no cross-site tracking pixel anywhere on this site. If you just read an essay or an atlas, we don't know you were here.

What we don't do

  • No Google Analytics, Vercel Analytics, PostHog, Plausible, or any other analytics tool.
  • No advertising or marketing pixels of any kind.
  • No third-party scripts loaded on public pages.
  • Fonts are self-hosted (via next/font) — your browser never calls out to a font CDN.

Cookies

We set three cookies, all HttpOnly (invisible to page JavaScript) and used only for sign-in — never for tracking or advertising:

  • ctzn_session — your signed-in session, if you have an account.
  • ctzn_oauth_state — a short-lived value used only during the sign-in flow itself.
  • ctzn_oauth_next — remembers where to send you back to after signing in.

None of these are set for anonymous readers browsing essays, atlases, or the chat tool.

What we store, and where

Sign-in today is limited to our own team (Google OAuth, restricted to @ctzn.pub addresses) — there is no general public account system yet. For signed-in accounts we store a profile (name, email, picture) and whatever content that account creates (drafts, saved analyses, chat history) in our database, hosted on Neon.

Two things leave the site as part of normal operation:

  • Google, during sign-in (standard OAuth — we never see your Google password).
  • Anthropic, server-side, to generate the plain-language answers in the chat tool and to help write article summaries. This happens on our servers, not in your browser.

If you ask us to search anything

Chat and search queries are logged (so we can improve results and avoid recomputing the same answer twice), but they are not tied to an identity unless you are signed in, and they are never sold or shared with advertisers.
