Sources and licences

The maps on this site draw on 17 datasets from 11 publishers: 6 in the public domain, 2 under CC0 1.0, 6 under CC BY 4.0, 2 free to use with attribution and 1 under ODbL.

Each section below is generated from the site’s data catalog and names the measures, levels and boundary years one set of maps carries. The numbered list after them gives every dataset with its publisher, years and licence.

Block group6,713 (6,804 estimate rows)6,587 (6,588 estimate rows)4,001

Los Angeles County and Cook County are one county each, so their county level is not drawn. The boundary count and the number of rows in the estimates differ for New York City block groups (6,713 and 6,804) and Los Angeles County block groups (6,587 and 6,588). Every row without a boundary is a block group with no residents, and all but one are block group 0, the Census Bureau's code for water-only areas. A map colours a boundary only when its id has a row.

Race and ethnicity shares and the bachelor’s degree share are computed by this site from published counts; the other measures are the Census Bureau’s published medians. Total population is carried to tell an area with no residents from a withheld estimate and is not mapped. How often each estimate is withheld is on Withheld estimates.

Values first, then boundaries, then the basemap. Boundary years matter as much as data years: values drawn on the previous decade’s tract lines raise no error, as Boundaries from the wrong decade shows.

Colophon

By Uma Huggins and Vishal Singh. Maps are drawn in the browser with MapLibre GL JS. Boundaries are vector tiles in PMTiles archives that carry each area’s id and no values; the values are joined to them in the browser by that id, so changing a measure repaints the map without downloading geometry again. Census boundaries are kept whole rather than clipped to a city edge, so a ZIP code area that crosses a county line is drawn in full.

The basemap is OpenFreeMap’s, drawn from OpenStreetMap data, and every map credits it. The charts on the reference pages are static SVG. The site is built with Next.js and hosted on Vercel.
