Presidential vote by county

In 2024, Trump led the two-party vote in 2,661 of the 3,108 counties in the lower 48 states and DC (85.6%). Those counties cast 51.0% of the 154.2 million votes for president in all 3,108.

A choropleth gives each county’s share the county’s land area, so the counties Trump led fill most of the map. Proportional symbols draw the same shares as circles sized by votes cast, so each county counts in proportion to its vote. The map opens on symbols; the choropleth is under Form.

Share and margin open in red–blue, because 50% of the two-party vote is a real centre and a diverging palette puts its neutral colour there. Turnout has no centre and opens in viridis. Other palettes are under Palette. Quantiles of a share put a fifth of counties in the top class however the election went; under red–blue, the same button gives classes of equal width centred on 50%.

Democratic two-party share, 2024

3,112 counties · Equal-count bins

Reading this map. Two-party share, so third parties are excluded rather than shown as a third colour. 2000 and 2016 both had large third-party votes, and a three-way share map moves with their strength rather than with the contest.

County returns: MIT Election Data and Science Lab; turnout’s voting-age population: American Community Survey · boundaries: US Census cartographic, 2020 · Alaska is left out because it reports by election district, not by county · Hawaii's 4 counties are classified and mapped but lie outside this frame · Kansas City, Missouri (124,288 votes) reports separately from the counties it spans and is not on the map
